On the northwest side of Chicago, there was once a portion of the "L" that ran for just under 3 miles. It was put out of commission and just stood there, abandoned. That is, until some citizens with an epic idea transformed this line into something that people could actually use. They took the idea of "rails to trails" to a whole new level with the 606. You just have to see it to believe it.
1. This line of track was originally built in 1873, and the last train ran on it in 2001.
2. As it stood abandoned, people came up with this awesome idea that it could be transformed into an elevated greenway.
3. Now, the park is a 2.7 mile trail that runs through 3 Chicago neighborhoods: Logan Square, Humboldt Park, and West Town.
4. The trail is constructed as such so that people of all abilities can use it, and it is frequented by bikers, walkers, and runners.
5. The 606 includes an observatory, skate park, and art installations.
6. There is even space for a garden.
7. You'll really enjoy the construction of the Ridgeway Trailhead, and so many of the touches that are put into this park.
8. But the best feature of all is that this park draws people from different communities and brings them together, uninterrupted.
Have you been on this trail? What did you think?
