7 Destinations Way Up North In Idaho That Are So Worth The Drive

Idaho has hidden gems, incredible attractions, and beautiful views all over the state. However, many Idahoans have never spent much time up north in Idaho's Panhandle. This part of the state is home to some of the most unique terrain, breathtaking overlooks, incredible lakes, and more. Here are just seven must-visit destinations way up north in Idaho that are definitely worth the drive.

1. The Palouse

The Palouse region is home to the most beautiful hills in America. This natural wonder is unlike any other in Idaho and was formed thousands of years ago. Any time of the year, the Palouse is breathtaking but one of our favorite times to visit is during the harvest when all you can see are fields of gold.

2. Cedar Street Bridge, Sandpoint

Located in Sandpoint is one of the most unique bridges in Idaho - the Cedar Street Bridge. Originally, it was built to connect Sandpoint’s downtown area to the east bank of Sand Creek in the early 1900s. Today, this unique bridge is a one-of-a-kind marketplace with all types of restaurants, shops, and boutiques.

3. Priest Lake State Park

There are many incredible lakes in the Panhandle including Lake Pend Oreille and Lake Coeur d’Alene, but one that doesn’t get the attention it often deserves is Priest Lake. Near the Canadian border, this lake sits in the Selkirk Mountains and is absolutely stunning. This body of water is a delightful place to fish, boat, swim, and camp. There are also all types of hiking opportunities and other unique features like the best natural waterslide in Idaho.

4. Route of the Hiawatha

The Route of the Hiawatha is one adventure that all cyclists, runners, and hikers should experience at least once. This is one of the most popular rail-trails in Idaho and it takes you through tunnels, over bridges, and through the middle of some of Idaho’s natural beauty. This world-class rail-trail is 15 miles long, but you can take a shuttle so most of your journey will be downhill.

5. Confluence Overlook, Lewiston

The Confluence Overlook is located on Highway 95, approximately eight miles north of Lewiston. This little-known overlook is absolutely stunning and is where you can see numerous northern Idaho features such as the Snake and Clearwater Rivers, Bitterroot and Wallowa Mountains, and Hells Canyon. It’s stunning!

6. Center of the Universe, Wallace

Wallace, Idaho is a well-known mountain town in Idaho. It features unique architecture, beautiful views, and excellent recreational attractions. However, this small town also has one claim to fame - it is the Center of the Universe. While technically not the Center of the Universe, this town at least pretends to be and you can stand at the center of Bank and Sixth Street and pretend you are there. 7. University of Idaho Botanical Garden and Arboretum, Moscow

As you explore the small town of Moscow in northern Idaho, you must visit The U of I Arboretum and Botanical Garden. This 63-acre garden is home to thousands of plants, a beautiful red barn, views of the Palouse, walking paths, ponds, bridges, and more. Any time of year, this Idaho botanical garden is going to make your jaw drop. It’s one destination you could spend all day exploring, admiring, and enjoying.
