These Are the Most Underrated Tourist Spots in Hawaii, According to Local Redditors
Local Redditors are spilling their secrets!
I love using Reddit to research upcoming vacations, especially to Hawaii. This is one of my favorite sources for learning travel tips and hidden gems that dot the islands. Recently, I’ve come across lists featuring several underrated tourist spots in Hawaii, according to local Redditors, and I thought I would share my findings. There were a few surprises on the list and some I felt deserved to be named. The following are just eight hidden gems in the Aloha State that you may want to add to your next island adventure.
1. Kaʻena Point State Park, Oahu
Ka’ena Point State Park often doesn’t get the attention it deserves because it’s not very easy to reach. This breathtaking state park is located on the northwest corner of Oahu and can only be accessed on foot. The Ka’ena Point Trail is an old railroad trail and a dirt road that is 2.5 miles along open coastline — it’s not the easiest journey. However, the final destination is well worth the effort as you’ll find sandy beaches, tide pools, incredible waves, and gorgeous views.
2. Yokohama Bay, Oahu
There are some gorgeous beaches on Oahu but many become quite crowded and loud. Yokohama Bay, also known as Keawa’ula Beach, is actually the last stretch of sand before you hike to Kaʻena Point State Park. Due to its secluded location, it doesn't tend to draw in the crowds. Plus, it has a rocky bottom and is known for strong currents and undercurrents. This is one beach where sunbathing and building sand castles is best — unless you are an experienced surfer, you'll want to avoid swimming here.
3. Liliha Bakery, Oahu
Liliha Bakery is one Oahu destination that every local and tourist alike should visit. This delightful shop has been tantalizing taste buds since 1950, and it is best known for its incredible breakfast dishes. However, lunch and dinner are also served here and no matter what you order, you can expect to crave it for weeks to come. Don’t leave without trying one of the pastries or cakes — they are divine. There are even five locations around the island, making it easy to add this bakery and diner to your itinerary.
4. Lapakahi State Historical Park, Big Island of Hawaii
You can take a step back in time when you visit this underrated tourist spot in Waimea — the Lapakahi State Historical Park. Here, you can take a self-guided tour by tackling the 1.1-mile Lapakahi Village Interpretive Trail. This unique, family-friendly hike takes you through a partially restored ancient fishing village where you can learn all about the Hawaiian lifestyle and capture some incredible ocean views. If visiting from November to May, watch for humpback whales.
5. Kalopa State Recreation Area, Big Island of Hawaii
I was not surprised to see Redditors mention Kalopa State Recreation Area as an underrated tourist spot on the Big Island. This destination is home to an arboretum and the Kalopa Nature Trail, an easy, family-friendly adventure that will get you up close to beautiful native trees and flowers. You can also reserve cabins and campsites at this recreation area if you want to turn your day trip into an overnight adventure.
6. Makena Beach, Maui
Makena Beach is no secret as it is one of the largest beaches on Maui. However, many Redditors said this destination doesn’t get the love it deserves and it’s one of the best beaches on the island. Makena Beach is 1.5 miles and nearly 100 feet wide in several places. While you may just want to capture the sun’s rays, dip your toes in the sand, and enjoy the stunning views in front of you, Makena Beach is also home to clear waters, perfect for snorkeling and swimming. On clear days, you can even enjoy views of Molokini and Kaho’olawe islands in the distance.
7. Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm, Maui
One tourist destination that is fragrant and beautiful is Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm on Maui. This is a private estate that sits on Haleakala Mountain at 4,000 feet above sea level. You can spend an afternoon at this farm, walking among the 10 acres of gardens, enjoying some delicious treats, and even visiting the gift shop. This is a bucket-list-worthy spot to not only enjoy the beauty of Maui but to also learn more about the sustainable spirit of the islands.
8. Koke’e State Park, Kauai
Koke’e State Park is located on the northwest side of Kauai and it will quickly find a place in your heart. This incredible Hawaii park is where you’ll enjoy views of the breathtaking Kalalau Valley from more than 4,000 feet in elevation. But it isn’t just the views here that make it worth your time. This state park also features bucket-list-worthy hiking trails and birdwatching opportunities. Koke’e State Park even offers several seasonal activities like plum picking and trout fishing. There's activities for every type of tourist.
