A Little-Known Slice Of Georgia History Can Be Found At This Unique Museum
There's so much history in Georgia, and we have a number of fascinating historical attractions dating back to Native American times. If you're interested in checking out museums or well-preserved historical sites, you certainly won't have much trouble filling an itinerary in the Peach State. One city that's well-known for having some of the best historical attractions in the state is Savannah. The Hostess City is home to so many museums and history-laden sites that it's easy for some to fall through the cracks, and one spot that doesn't get as much attention as it should is the Pin Point Heritage Museum. Check out this Gullah Geechee history museum in Savannah, GA below:
The Pin Point Heritage Museum is operated by the Coastal Heritage Society, which runs several local museums. It's inside an old oyster and crab factory and focuses on the Gullah Geechee culture.
If you're not familiar with the Gullah Geechee people, they are descendants of African slaves who once worked on the coastal islands in the South Carolina and Georgia area. The isolation of living on an island resulted in the development of a unique culture that wasn't found elsewhere.
There are a variety of fascinating displays at the Pin Point Heritage Museum, including Gullah Geechee art and artifacts.
The museum is only open a few days a week, but it's definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.
The Gullah Geechee people still live in the area today, but their history is not as prominently displayed as much of the colonial history that you'll find in other museums in Savannah.
The museum also contains plenty of information about the oyster and crab factory that was once here, which was primarily staffed by Gullah Geechee people.
And of course, a visit here is a great opportunity to explore the unique coastal ecosystem of the area.
