Georgia has some wonderfully ghastly tales that will strike fear in the heart of residents and visitors alike. One particular place dates back centuries. This haunted hospital in Georgia was one of the oldest continuously operating hospitals in the country. It's also one of Savannah's most haunted locations. Take a look for yourself, and learn the history behind this haunted spot.
The Old Candler Hospital in Savannah is infamous as one of the most haunted places in Georgia. Trust us, this spot is creepy!
First chartered in 1804, this hospital was revolutionary in its day.
However, it's the hidden secrets lurking behind these walls that make this place spooky and fascinating.
The Old Candler Hospital is famous for having a morgue tunnel that runs underneath the building. The tunnel goes to nearby Forsyth Park.
This tunnel was particularly useful during the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1878. The numerous victims that succumbed to the disease were able to be transported via tunnel.
Rumor has it that the tunnel was often filled with the deceased. Horse drawn carriages would pull up in the solitude of night to secretly carry off the dead to be buried.
The Old Candler Hospital is also home to the Candler Oak tree. This tree is also among the most haunted places in Georgia in its own right. Nicknamed the "Hanging Tree," it's one of the oldest living landmarks in the area and has a sordid past.
Other rumors surrounding the Old Candler Hospital include shock therapy that was used at the psychiatric ward. Unfortunately, science was not as advanced as it is now and many horrifying procedures were dubbed "treatments."
Today, only the brave can wander past the old hospital. The Blue Orb Savannah Ghost Tour offers an up close and personal look at this spooky spot.
Keep your eyes out for any ghostly apparitions. Many have been reported in the area over the years.
