It’s not every day that you can enjoy a 60-mile scenic byway that also packs in a unique history lesson. The Historic Effingham-Ebenezer Scenic Byway in Georgia offers up a special scenic drive, celebrating the history of the Ebenezer settlement and Effingham County, one of the original eight counties in Georgia. Learn all about the history of the original settlements while enjoying a drive through the countryside.

The town of Ebenezer, Georgia holds a unique history within the state.

The first group of settlers in Savannah back in 1734 were assigned a plot of land by Gen. James Edward Oglethorpe nearly 25 miles north of the riverfront city.

The settlers of this new area were German Lutherans, who were fleeing Salzburg due to religious persecution.

Because the Salzburgers emphasize the idea of community and family, the culture of Effingham County can be seen wherever you go - especially along the famed Effingham-Ebenezer Scenic Byway.

This 60-mile scenic byway retraces the significantly historical places throughout Effingham county, as well as focuses on other special spots.

Drive through the vast expanse of sprawling grasslands, scenic vistas along the river, and oak-lined roads as you wind your way.

Drivers will want to start at Fourth Street in the City of Rincon and head north, recreating the night that George Washington embarked on his Southern Tour in 1791.

From there, travelers will enter into Ebenezer, past Ebenezer Creek, and then the ghost town of Stillwell.

A few other towns across the scenic byway will include Springfield, Guyton, and more.
