Becoming a Georgia local truly is an honor. In fact, you also become privy to certain information that many other non-locals aren't aware of. Once you become a local, you're able to go out and explore and adventure throughout your state and find hidden gems that not many people know about, simply because you have the time, and maybe a hint or two, a word form a friend of a friend. Deep in the Dawson Forest in Georgia lies the remnants of a once sprawling nuclear testing facility from the early 1950s that was nicknamed Air Force Plant #67.

Visitors to the area may not even be aware that there is a hidden nuclear laboratory in Dawson Forest, just beyond the bushes.

This once-powerful reaction testing center was a joint effort between the Air Force and weapons manufacturer Lockheed.

While this nuclear laboratory was active, the purpose was to utilize the nuclear reactor and irradiate different types of military equipment in order to observe and test the equipment as well as the surrounding forest area.

The entire purpose of the laboratory was to see just how feasible a nuclear-powered airplane would be.

The results were a bit astounding. According to reports, whenever the reactor was turned on, all personnel would need to retreat underground immediately and the residual radiation pollution caused severe damage to the Dawson Forest and the wildlife that lived within.

The nuclear lab closed down in the early 1970s. However, the exact happenings of what went down for the almost two decades that it was functioning is still considered highly classified. The information is not available to the public, obviously.

While what remains are just foundations and concrete grids, that doesn't stop many adventurous and brave explorers from attempting to see for themselves the ghostly ruins of this mysterious government project.

It is said that no radiation is detected near or around the ruins, but we don't suggest entering, despite the obvious tunnels leading into a deep, dark past.

Despite the fact the hot cell building still remains almost fully in tact on the outside, each door, window, and access point is permanently sealed..

The exact address of this nuclear laboratory in Dawson Forest won't show up on a GPS, but you can get to Dawson Forest Road East in Dawsonville to get nearby.
