If you happen to live in South Florida and you're looking for a way to keep cool that doesn't involve saltwater, we have the perfect option. The Venetian Pool in Coral Gables is an aquatic adventure that is unlike anything else in the United States. Completed in 1924 from a coral and limestone rock quarry, the refreshing pool draws people from all over the world to take a swim.
What Makes the Venetian Pool in Florida Special?
Tucked away in the beautiful city of Coral Gables is a century-old swimming hole known as the Venetian Pool. But this isn't your standard pool by any means. The Venetian Pool in Florida is the only swimming pool listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and continues to be a landmark that draws in crowds every year with its stunning architecture and historic significance.
Built to resemble a Venetian lagoon, the design for this unique swimming hole included bridges, towers, striking greenery, and a casino. Originally a quarry where the limestone was sourced for surrounding Coral Gables homes, the pool was sold to the City of Coral Gables in 1927. It has since been recognized as one of the most unique Florida attractions the Sunshine State has to offer.
Why You Should Visit This Historic Swimming Pool in Florida
Now, as one of the city’s main attractions, the Venetian Pool allows visitors the chance to cool off on those scorching summer afternoons as they dip into the waters of this crisp, spring-fed pool in Florida. The pool is kept at a refreshing 76 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, ensuring the temperature is always cool, but not too cold.
Clocking in at 820,000 gallons, the pool is fed with spring water from an underground aquifer, and during the spring and summer, it is filled and drained every single day. One of the best things to do in Coral Gables (if not the single best), this swimming hole remains one of the most highly-rated summer destinations in Florida.
Beyond the aquifer keeping the pool at a refreshing temperature all season long, it’s also the natural beauty of the area and the two different waterfalls that make a visit so special. The tropical landscaping is truly gorgeous, filled with palms, flowers, and other wondrous greenery. Anyone looking for tropical places in Florida will delight in the surroundings of this Caribbean-like oasis.
Make sure to take some time to swim underneath the waterfalls or through the cave grottos as well. The realistic nature of these cascades and watery caves is just one of many features that contribute to this pool's reputation as one of the best hidden gems in Florida.
