Looking Back at My Childhood in Florida: How Zoo Miami Became an Unforgettable Experience

From scavenger hunts to safari dreams: how Zoo Miami and its summer camp left a wild mark on my childhood.

Growing up in Florida, I was blessed with weekends at the beach, toes in the sand, seemingly endless summers with swaying palm trees, spontaneous rain showers, and a kaleidoscope of outdoor adventures. But nothing quite compared to the magic of Zoo Miami, or what was known at the time as Miami Metrozoo. While many kids knew it as just a zoo, for me, it was practically a second home. Beyond the regular family visits and monorail rides, it was the summers I spent at Zoo Camp that turned my childhood into something extraordinary.

Zoo Camp at Zoo Miami was where my wildest dreams came alive. Imagine spending your days observing animals and becoming part of their world—learning their stories, understanding their habits, and even going behind the scenes with real zookeepers. It wasn’t your typical summer camp with crafts and canoes. Here, our activities revolved around the incredible creatures that lived just beyond the trails.

One of my favorite camp memories was the epic scavenger hunts. The zookeepers, whom we looked up to like rock stars, would hide naturally shed tiger whiskers around the Asia habitat, turning a simple walk through the zoo into an exciting treasure hunt. We'd huddle in groups, whispering guesses and darting behind bamboo or beneath branches, all while learning how to tell a tiger whisker from a blade of grass. Each whisker we found felt like a secret shared between us and the animal it once belonged to, a tiny relic from a magnificent creature.

Those camp days were also filled with hands-on activities that stuck with me well into adulthood. Feeding goats in the petting zoo, observing a giraffe's gentle demeanor up close, and listening to keepers explain how they care for everything from flamingos to Komodo dragons—it all left a lasting impression. The immersive experiences, paired with the natural, cageless design of the zoo, made it feel less like a tourist spot and more like a journey around the world.

Looking back, Zoo Miami wasn’t just a place I visited—it was a place that helped shape who I am. It taught me about responsibility, empathy, and the power of curiosity. It showed me that conservation isn’t just a concept in a textbook; it’s a hands-on, everyday mission. Those formative years, spent in the humid Florida air surrounded by the hum of cicadas and the chatter of exotic birds, ignited a love of wildlife and learning that I carry with me still.

For me, Zoo Miami isn’t just part of Florida’s landscape—it’s part of my story. An unforgettable chapter filled with wild memories, lifelong lessons, and a deep, enduring love for the natural world.
