Your Best Summer Experience Isn’t by Car, It’s by Boat to Florida’s Raccoon Island
Get up close with nature and friendly raccoons on this one-of-a-kind boat tour just minutes form Miami.
While so many people are opting for road trip travel this summer, we're going to pivot here in the Sunshine State and show you a different experience altogether. First things first, did you know that South Florida had its very own Raccoon Island? I didn't either until a few months ago. Raccoon Island—also known as Sandspur Island—is a small, uninhabited mangrove isle in Biscayne Bay, near North Miami Beach. This unique hidden gem earned its nickname thanks to the friendly raccoons that roam its shores—descendants of animals believed to have escaped or been released during Hurricane Andrew in the early 1990s. Over the years, these raccoons have become something of a local legend, known for their gentle nature and curiosity around visitors.
The island itself formed naturally, made up of sand and mangroves that created an ideal habitat for both wildlife and a bit of unexpected tourism. The area is rich in biodiversity, with ospreys, iguanas, and the occasional manatee or dolphin adding to the experience. Because Raccoon Island is only accessible by water, visiting requires a bit of adventure, but the journey is well worth it. Enter: the ultimate boat tour for summer.
Several guided tours are available for those looking to explore this unique spot. Boat tours are the most popular, with companies like Ocean Force Adventures and Aquarius Boat Tours offering excursions that usually last two to three hours. These often include scenic detours past iconic Miami locations such as Star Island and Indian Creek, sometimes referred to as "Billionaire Bunker." Prices vary, but private charters can range from $169 to over $800, depending on the experience. For those seeking an active experience, guided kayak or stand-up paddleboard (SUP) tours are also available. These paddle trips typically last around three hours and offer a more immersive way to navigate the mangrove tunnels and calm bay waters that lead to the island.
Tours usually depart in the morning, which is ideal for wildlife viewing and avoiding the midday heat. Visitors are encouraged to bring water, snacks, sunscreen, bug spray, and of course, a camera to capture the moments. Some guides even suggest bringing extra water to offer the raccoons, though feeding them processed foods is highly discouraged to protect their health.
What makes Raccoon Island so special is its unexpected blend of natural wonder and quirky wildlife encounters, set against the backdrop of Miami’s luxury coastline. This is one of the most unique tours in South Florida, showing you not only a natural wonderland of mangroves and flora, but also a fun side featuring animals as well. Just make sure always to treat the island inhabitants with respect and follow all of the outlined rules by your tour guide.
