Timeless and iconic is the simplest way I could describe the Cape May-Lewes Ferry ride. For over 60 years, this historic ferry has been transporting passengers between Delaware and New Jersey. In fact, over 50 million people have taken the trip since the service began in 1964. Operated by the Delaware River and Bay Authority, there are three ferries in the fleet and two terminals: Cape May in New Jersey and Lewes Terminal in Delaware. Each boat can carry more than 800 passengers and 100 vehicles.

From the Lewes terminal, it will take about 90 minutes to complete the 17-mile-long one-way trip across the bay. Passengers can board the boat by vehicle or on foot. If you’re only crossing into Jersey for the day, I’d suggest leaving your car at the terminal. Once you get to the other side, a shuttle service is available for transportation around Cape May. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled cruise. Or I would suggest getting there early to check out the seasonal restaurants and attractions at the terminal.
