Fictional creatures have been fascinating people of all ages since the dawn of time. Centaurs, unicorns, goblins: all cultures feature various animals or animal-human hybrids in their folklore. One aquatic creature that is heavily present in stories from Europe, America, Asia, and Africa is the mermaid. These half-fish creatures are often depicted as having the top halves of beautiful women. It's thought that the legends probably come from fishermen sightings of manatees or sharks, and that mermaids don't actually exist. However, for a limited time only, you can see mermaids in Connecticut here at our very own Mystic Aquarium.
The Mystic Aquarium is one of the top attractions in Mystic. This AZA-accredited aquarium has thousands of animals on display and is home to the only beluga whales in New England. You can also see seals, penguins, sting rays, and all kinds of other fish and aquatic species that are often on display in aquariums.
For a limited time only in March of 2023, you can also see something unique here: mermaids!
From March 2-5 and March 9-12, 2023, you'll be able to see mermaids live and in action as they swim around the aquarium's Caribbean Reef tank.
The mermaids will have set dive times throughout the day, so make sure to check the schedule before heading over to the area. You can see the mermaids for free with general aquarium admission.
Want an extra-special experience? For an additional fee, you can enjoy a meet-and-greet with a mermaid on land.
The mermaids in Connecticut will only be a part of our world for a couple of weekends, so make sure to make plans to visit!
