Colorado has a deep-rooted history in railroads (it was one of our first big industries!), so it makes sense that we also have many museums that pay homage to all things trains. One of these museums is known for offering outdoor rides on a real train, but you may be surprised to learn that there is also an entire complex of indoor exhibits as well:
Welcome to the one-of-a-kind Colorado Railroad Museum!
Located in Golden, the Colorado Railroad Museum is famous for its Polar Express and Day Out with Thomas rides, but many miss a whole other side to the attraction.
Boasting an entire complex worth of treasures, the Museum fun begins in the Depot, a replica 1880s building that houses temporary galleries, videos, shopping, and hands-on activities.
While visiting the Depot for all this (and to see what these old stations were like) is exciting enough, our favorite part has to be the Denver HO Model Railroad Club Layout, which features a gigantic display depicting the various kinds of mountain railroading in Colorado.
The Depot isn't the Museum's only indoor attraction, thanks to the on-site Library and its impressive collection of books and other educational material.
While it isn't indoors, you will also want to walk around the 15-acre Railyard (there are 100+ trains and other vehicles scattered around) and explore the authentic Roundhouse (pictured).
Even when there isn't a special event, you can still ride a train around the property!
