You can get a view of some stunning French Gothic architecture right here in Colorado. How, you ask? Just pay a visit to the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Denver.

Standing tall against the backdrop of the city of Denver, this iconic church looks much older than its surroundings.

Because of its French Gothic style, you might feel like you've gone back in time hundreds of years. This is because it was modeled on a 13th-century church, but the cathedral was actually completed in 1912.

Nonetheless, the limestone, granite, and marble structure is just as stunning as those abroad.

The dozens and dozens of stained glass windows, imported from Germany, are likely to catch your eye when you step inside.

An interesting fact is that each of its spires has been struck by lightning, one in 1912 and the other in 1997.

Also, Pope John Paul II once celebrated mass at the church. This is one of the few churches in America honored with this distinction and his visit is memorialized with a statue on the grounds.

The Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Heart is much more than a landmark and still very much a place of worship. Masses are held daily and the church can hold up to 800 people.
