While Slab City has made a name for itself with its unique lifestyle, it has also gained popularity due to the incredible art you can find here. One of the most well-known displays is Salvation Mountain, a roadside attraction that is extremely hard to miss. Salvation Mountain was created by Leonard Knight, an artist who spent many years working on this project, creating it as a tribute to God.

What is Salvation Mountain?

The mountain, which is actually more like a hill, is 50 feet high and 150 feet long — it's certainly not small. It is made out of local adobe clay and boasts bright and colorful paint that was donated for the project.

Salvation Mountain's large size, colorful display, and powerful message have attracted individuals from around the world. Bible verses are written all over this work, with the message “God is Love,” boldly painted in the middle of the hill.

Things to do in Slab City

When you visit, I recommend you walk around, looking for familiar objects painted on the mountain. Count how many scripture verses you can spot and ponder any messages that stick out to you. Not only is this sight quite eye-catching, but it makes you stop and think as well. It’s truly one of a kind. If you can time your visit around sunrise or sunset, the skies will treat you to a wonderful show that will only add to your photos.
