Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fontana Boathouse In Buffalo Is One Of The Most Stunning Lesser-Known Places In The City

Discover the Fontana Boathouse, a unique Frank Lloyd Wright design located on Buffalo's waterfront, available for tours and special events.

As residents of the Empire State who are lucky enough to call areas of Western New York our home, we're more than familiar with the stunning architectural work created by Frank Lloyd Wright. In the past here at Only In Buffalo, we've shared with our readers how you can tour the famous Graycliff estate here in our area but there's one piece of architecture by Wright that you may not have realized is situated right out along our city's waterfront. If you're ready to uncover more hidden gems around the Queen City, then it's time you discover the Fontana Boathouse for yourself.

Out along the lakefront where you're right by the Bird Island Pier, Frank Lloyd Wright's Fontana Boathouse is a unique piece of this famous architect's work.

One of our city's many lesser-known gems, the Fontana Boathouse was originally commissioned by Cudworth Beye back in 1905 - a boathouse meant to be used by the University of Wisconsin crew team.

Long remaining as the only unbuilt design in Wright’s Wasmuth Portfolio, the boathouse would eventually come to life after years of fundraising in 2007.

Today, throughout the year Buffalonians and out-of-town visitors alike can come out to the lakefront to tour Western New York's most famous boathouse.

Giving you an in-depth look at one of Frank Lloyd Wright's most noteworthy designs, the Fontana Boathouse is considered to be the most abstract work of Wright's architectural art.

Aside from being a stunning and lesser-known place to explore in Buffalo, the Fontana Boathouse is also home to the West Side Rowing Club!

When folks aren't touring the inside of the boathouse or getting ready to row out on Lake Erie, you'll find that this place is often used for special events.

That's right! Frank Lloyd Wright's phenomenal Fontana Boathouse is available to rent out as an event space.

So whether you're here to see the symmetrical structure and its perfectly flat roof to check another Frank Lloyd Wright structure off of your bucket list or you're ready to celebrate a special occassion, it's always a wonderful idea to come out and visit the Fontana Boathouse of Buffalo.
