One of Arkansas' oldest museums still has plenty of treasures to delight guests of every age. The Fort Smith Museum of History is perfect for families wanting a mix of education and nostalgia. Let's take a quick tour and learn about one of the upcoming reasons to stop by this Fort Smith gem.
When was the last time you visited your local museum? The Fort Smith Museum of History is one of Arkansas' oldest!
It was established back in 1910 and resides in the 1906 Atkinson-Williams Warehouse. The museum's first goal was to save the oldest building in town - the Commissary. Now, the museum showcases different Fort Smith influencers and cultural ties.
Everyone will be able to find one exhibit that captivates their interest.
The museum holds an expansive collection of over 40,000 pieces from Arkansas' past. Learn about the city that developed around the original 1817 military fort or discover the early broadcast radio/television that made the waves between the 20s and 50s.
After quenching your thirst for knowledge, head to the museum's pharmacy for a delicious reward.
The nostalgic pharmacy has a working soda and ice cream fountain from the 1930s! Sip on a float or splurge on a sundae in this delectable exhibit. You can see the full menu right here.
Some historical celebrities routinely make appearances at the museum.
Your next chance to see Judge Isaac C. Parker and his wife will be at the upcoming Fort Smith Fall Festival on Sept. 28th, 2019. This fest is the city's largest historically-themed event, with tons of different activities and vendors. The Fort Smith Museum of History will have re-enactors Judge Parker and his wife giving a talk about the infamous "Hanging Judge." For more info on this event, follow this page.
No matter if you wait for bigger events like the fall festival or swing by for a quick day trip, the Fort Smith Museum of History will pique your family's curiosity to the past.
You can visit the museum from Tues - Sat 10 am - 5 pm. For more information and admission, head to the Fort Smith Museum of History's website. You can also follow their Facebook Page.
