Arizona is full of haunted places, and some are hiding deep below the earth's surface. Grand Canyon Caverns offers a ghost walk that leads you through underground passageways rife with paranormal activity -- and the tour is strictly lights-out.
Often, when we think about haunted places, our minds don't even consider the underground. What if we told you that one of Arizona's most paranormally active spots was hiding in the deepest, darkest recesses of the state?
Grand Canyon Caverns in Peach Springs is notorious for spectral sightings, and their Ghost Walk lets you get up-close-and-personal with the otherworldly residents.
In the past 50 years, eight people have either died or been buried on the Grand Canyon Caverns property. Legend also has it these very passageways were used as a Native American burial ground.
With a history like this, it's no wonder guests frequently experience unexplained phenomena.
From disembodied whispers to the apparition of a man standing by the elevator shaft, the ghost stories are endless. Group sizes are kept small for an intimate experience, so rest assured what you saw or heard wasn't a fellow Ghost Walk attendee.
Is a chill running down your spine yet?
No lights are allowed on the walk. The only source of illumination will be the eerie green glow emanating from your EMF meter - a device used to detect the presence of unseen entities.
The more paranormal activity it registers, the more light you'll have.... but we're not so sure that's a good thing (if you're afraid of ghosts, that is)!
Tours depart nightly at 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. depending on the season. Guests can expect to spend about one hour underground.
Adult tickets are $22.95, while the cost for children ages 6-12 is $16.95 (plus tax.)
All that spookiness sure works up an appetite. Why not enjoy a meal at the Cavern Grotto after the tour?
The restaurant is actually located underground and features an expansive menu of salad, burgers, steak, and more delicious offerings. Hours are 11:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. daily.
If you're brave enough, extend your night of fright by booking the Cavern Suite. Guests have heard the faint sound of chants and seen shadowy figures dancing on the cave walls, among other happenings from beyond the grave.
Several aboveground lodging opportunities are also available.
