All Aboard the Scenic Train in Arizona Where You Can Leaf Peep

Ride through Arizona’s stunning red rock canyons and golden cottonwoods on a breathtaking fall train adventure through Verde Canyon.

The Sedona area doesn't have an "off-season," but if I had to pick a favorite time of year to visit, it would definitely be autumn. Verde Canyon in Clarkdale, a town just outside of Sedona, comes alive with brilliant fall colors, and there's only one way to see them up close: a ride on the historic Verde Canyon Railroad. This scenic train ride in Arizona takes you deep into the canyon, showcasing the golden leaves in all their showstopping glory.

The ride begins at the Verde Canyon Railroad depot in Clarkdale, a small town roughly 30 minutes west of Sedona. As you board the vintage train cars, you'll be transported back to the heyday of the passenger railroad era, with the bonus of modern amenities like air conditioning. Panoramic windows showcase the towering canyon walls as the train rolls past, and open-air viewing cars let you fully immerse yourself in the dramatic scenery.

Since Verde Canyon is only accessible by rail, its rugged landscape remains virtually unspoiled. The route runs parallel to the Verde River, a tributary of the Colorado River, traveling past ancient ruins, over historic bridges, and through a 734-foot tunnel carved out of the rock over 100 years ago.

While the four-hour journey is always breathtaking, autumn brings a spectacle that will stay etched in your memory for years to come. Verde Canyon is nestled between the Coconino and Prescott National Forests, in a lush riparian area that turns into a vivid autumn oasis. The trees erupt in a fiery display of golden, amber, and deep red colors, providing an unforgettable show that captivates passengers of all ages. Nothing compares to feeling the crisp fall air on your skin as the train rumbles along the tracks amid postcard-worthy scenery. And since Arizona's fall foliage typically peaks a bit later in the season, you can enjoy the mesmerizing views well into November.

The train runs from Clarkdale to Perkinsville, then returns on the same route. Even though the landscape hasn't changed, the ride back is an entirely new experience because the sunlight hits it from a different angle, making the fall colors appear even more vibrant than before. The area is also home to wildlife such as bald eagles, deer, and great blue herons, so keep your eyes peeled and prepare to be awestruck. When you arrive back at the depot, enjoy a meal at the on-site cafe and explore the gift shop before heading on your way.

Visit the Verde Canyon Railroad's website for more information about this scenic train ride Arizona, including a train schedule and a list of upcoming events. Special train rides are offered year-round, including during the fall, so take a look and book your tickets before they sell out. (If you miss the themed trips, don't worry; the standard route is perfect for leaf-peeping all season long.)
