Winter in Alaska is unlike anywhere else: short days, long nights, and a deep chill that seems to settle into everything. But as the year’s darkest night approaches, Alaskans come together to celebrate the Winter Solstice, turning what could feel like endless darkness into a season of warmth, light, and connection. For me, the solstice is more than just a date on the calendar — it’s a time to honor old and new traditions that bring joy and meaning to these cold winter days. From ice candle-lit walks to dazzling light displays, these are my favorite Alaskan solstice traditions that transform the darkness into something truly magical.

1. Winter Solstice Festival – Anchorage

  • Date & Time: Saturday, December 21, 2024, from 5 to 8 p.m.
  • Location: Cuddy Family Midtown Park, 201 E 40th Ave, Anchorage, AK
  • Details: This family-friendly festival offers ice skating to holiday music, horse-drawn wagon rides, dog sled rides, visits with Santa's reindeer, and appearances by Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Warm up by the fire with hot chocolate, and enjoy treats from local food trucks. All activities are free to the public.

2. Solstice Tree Tour – Anchorage

  • Date & Time: Sunday, December 15, 2024, from 4-8 p.m.
  • Location: Kincaid Park, Anchorage, AK
  • Details: Hosted by the Nordic Ski Association of Anchorage, this event features a 2.5-kilometer loop adorned with festively decorated trees sponsored by local businesses. Attendees can enjoy free hot chocolate, s'mores, live music, and a beer garden for adults. The event is open to all, with opportunities for walking, snowshoeing, or skiing the loop.

3. Winter Solstice Celebration – Fairbanks

  • Date: Week of December 21, 2024
  • Location: Downtown Fairbanks, AK
  • Details: Downtown Fairbanks comes alive around the winter solstice with various events celebrating the return of light. Activities include festive decorations, community gatherings, and cultural performances, highlighting the unique spirit of Fairbanks during this special time.

4. Winter Solstice Walk – Eagle River Nature Center

  • Details: The Eagle River Nature Center’s Winter Solstice Walk is a magical way to celebrate the season. This serene evening event features an illuminated trail lined with ice lanterns, creating a breathtaking winter wonderland in the heart of Alaska’s wilderness. The gentle glow of the lanterns guides you through snowy trails surrounded by towering trees and sweeping mountain views. This is a popular event, and pre-registration is required to secure your spot. Limited to one time slot per family to allow as many participants as possible.

5. Brighter Winter Nights – Alaska Botanical Garden

  • Location: Alaska Botanical Garden, Anchorage, AK
  • Details: The Brighter Winter Nights event at the Alaska Botanical Garden transforms the snowy trails and gardens into a dazzling winter wonderland. Thousands of twinkling lights illuminate the paths, creating a serene and festive atmosphere. Visitors can explore beautifully lit installations, enjoy fire pits for warming up, and sip on hot drinks while taking in the wintery charm. Advance purchase for tickets is highly recommended, as this event often sells out.

6. Zoo Lights – Alaska Zoo

  • Date & Times: Nightly from late November 2024 through early January 2025, 5-8 p.m
  • Location: Alaska Zoo, Anchorage, AK
  • Details: The Zoo Lights event at the Alaska Zoo is a winter favorite for families and animal lovers. Wander through the zoo’s pathways adorned with stunning light displays, from sparkling animal sculptures to colorful light tunnels. While some of the zoo’s animals may be snoozing for the season, others can still be spotted in their winter habitats. The trails are well-maintained, but warm layers and sturdy footwear are a must. And you can warm up with hot chocolate and warm treats that are available for purchase!
