1. Denali
The tallest mountain in North America and Alaska's greatest claim to fame deserves the top spot, every single time. It is so spectacular and renowned that it continues to bring out the inner-tourist in us every time we mention it.
2. Valley of 10,000 Smokes
Head to Katmai National Park and Preserve to check out this stunning area that is a result of the eruption of the Novarupta volcano on June 6-8, 1912.
3. Bering Glacier
South of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and about 6 miles from the Gulf of Alaska is what is known as the largest glacier in North America. With the Bagley Icefield combined, this is one of the most fascinating displays of nature in all of the last frontier.
4. Aurora Borealis
Most frequently seen during the fall and winter months (when it actually gets dark outside), these dancing Northern Lights make appearances all throughout the 49th state. Wait for a clear night and be sure to look up!
5. Mendenhall Ice Caves
Head to Alaska's capital city of Juneau to explore these fascinating ice caves. It's a lofty hike. but the end result is something that truly looks like it's straight out of a fairy tale. A mesmerizing, heart pounding adrenaline rush is guaranteed.
6. Totem Bight State Historical Park
This 33-acre state park in Ketchikan is home to one of the largest displays of totem poles in the world. Rich history and abundant cultural influences are ever-so apparent in this magical place.
7. Serpentine Hot Springs
Head to the Bering Land Bridge National Preserve off the Nome-Taylor Road to take a dip in this place known for its healing water. Stay overnight in a public-use cabin and let yourself be at peace in a totally secluded Alaska location.
8. Keystone Canyon
Head to Valdez on the Richardson Hwy for an up-close-and-personal look at this fascinating canyon carved by the Lowe River.
9. Chena Ice Hotel, Museum & Bar
North to Alaska and on to Fairbanks to check out something that is so 'Only in Alaska' that you won't be able to keep your jaw from dropping. Step inside, suit up in a parka and let your eyes sparkle with amazement as you check out all the intricate details of the ice carvings.
10. Homer Spit
On the southern tip of The Kenai is this 4.5-mile-long spit that jolts out into the stunningly beautiful Kachemak Bay. Visit for the natural beauty, great restaurants and epic fishing in the 'halibut fishing capital of the world.'
11. Glacier Gardens
This family owned botanical garden in Juneau is filled with bright colors and glorious beauty. Visitors love the upside down trees and the well-maintained hiking areas.
12. Tongass National Forest
The largest national forest in the United States is something that everyone should write home about. Visit southeast Alaska for an opportunity to explore these 17 million acres of temperate rainforest.
13. Abandoned Igloo Hotel
An odd sight to behold, yet so very 'Only in Alaska' at the same time. Look to the right as you drive on the George Parks Hwy from Anchorage to Denali nearest to the town of Cantwell. Or pull over to the side of the road and check this structure out. Just be sure to use caution as there is a rumor that wildlife use this place as a shelter during the winter months.
14. Liberty Falls
Hike in just over a mile and a half to this beautiful, thrusting waterfall that drops down from sharp rock edges. Liberty Falls State Recreational Site is located near Chitina in the Copper River Valley off the Edgerton Highway.
15. Turnagain Arm
Located on one of the most scenic highways in all of Alaska is this breathtaking stretch known as Turnagain Arm. Drive from Anchorage towards the Whittier turnoff and let your eyes be rewarded with incredible mountain and glacier views.
