Your Summer Just Got a Lot Cooler With a Visit to This Alaska Ice Museum
This is the perfect place to spend a "chill" day near Fairbanks, Alaska.
My list of things I love about summers in Alaska is long—very long. We have breathtaking hiking trails to explore, national parks to visit, wildlife to watch, and so much more. And even if the weather doesn't want to cooperate or it's just a little too warm for an adventure outside, I have just the place for your summer bucket list. The Aurora Ice Museum, located at Chena Hot Springs in Fairbanks, may be the best indoor summer attraction in the Last Frontier. Just make sure you don't forget your winter coat!
Chena Hot Springs is a dreamy getaway destination. This area dates back to the early 1900s, when two brothers went in search of a rumored hot spring, as they desired a treatment to ease rheumatism pain. Within only a few years of discovering Chena Hot Springs, the property grew with small cabins for visitors, a bathhouse, and a stable. The place continued to gain popularity, and today, it is a year-round destination for anyone desiring some time away, quiet, and relaxation.
When you visit, you'll certainly want to stay for a while. There are cabins, campsites, and yurts to reserve. Spend your days soaking in the hot tub, enjoying a massage, and even diving into a meal at the on-site restaurant.
Just don't miss the Aurora Ice Museum.
This museum isn't like anything else you'll see in the area. It was built using more than 1,000 tons of ice and snow harvested right at the resort. To keep the ice cool, the museum stays at 25 degrees Fahrenheit and uses a patented absorption chiller, the first of its kind in the world.
And while the cold may be a shock to your system when you first step inside, so will the things you see as you walk around. The interior of this museum is made completely of ice and houses many breathtaking ice sculptures. The details of each sculpture are extraordinary, and you may find yourself stopping and staring at each one.
In addition to the remarkable sculptures, you'll also find attractions that will impress, such as a full bar made of ice. From the stools to the glasses themselves, everything is carved out of ice. Even details like the chandeliers are made from ice—it's quite the sight to see. Look up at the lights as they change colors, mimicking the incredible Northern Lights that are often visible from this hot springs resort. And make sure to check out the two-story observation tower. This is the type of museum where you'll not only cool off, but you can let your imagination run wild.
No matter how long you stay, you'll certainly want warmer clothing for this adventure. Parkas are free to use at the museum, and you may want to bring your own gloves and hats for extra warmth. Tickets are required for individuals ages six and older. The Aurora Ice Museum is open daily, 365 days a year, and specialized tours are available. You can learn more on the Chena Hot Springs website or at the activity desk located at this hot springs resort.
