The gray whales are baleen whales that migrate between feeding grounds annually.

They grow to a size of 49 feet long, and their weight can reach up to 40 tons! They live longs lives, often reaching 55 to 70 years of age.

The gray whale migration takes two to three months, and they swim between 5,000-6,800 miles!

These beautiful creatures can reach top speeds of 5mph, covering over 75 miles a day during their migration! That makes their total year round migration somewhere between 10,000 and 13,800 miles long. This is believed to be the longest migration of any mammal on the planet!

During February and March, the gray whales begin to leave the area outside of Baja, Mexico, and head north.

Males and females without calves are the first to head north. Around late March through May, mother whales with calves begin to follow, once the calves are big enough.

Over 20,000 gray whales are believed to be a part of this gigantic migration.

Some of the whales drop out of the mass migration and feed along the Pacific Coast, outside of California, Oregon, and Washington state. However the majority make it all the way up to the Arctic feeding grounds.

Early October, the whales begin to head back down to the lagoons of Baja.

The best time to see these whales in Resurrection Bay is late March through mid May. This makes it one of the most interesting boat tours to see in the spring time!
