4 Unusual Buildings in Alabama You Have to See to Believe

These wacky and weirdly wonderful creations are some of the strangest buildings in Alabama worth visiting.

Architecture in Alabama is not one-dimensional. You can find Spanish Colonial inspiration in buildings like the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Passenger Terminal, a historic train station in downtown Mobile. Then, there is the wacky and weirdly wonderful, like the Rock Igloo Prayer House in Celera.

Some of the strangest buildings in Alabama were built from the quirky side of humans’ imaginations, and these are the conversational starters that leave us with more questions than answers. Check out my list of the unique architecture in Alabama and discover why these buildings stand out from the rest.

1. The Story Behind Fairhope Castles

alt

If I told you that there are hand-built fairytale castles in a historic small town in Alabama, would you be surprised? Most folks have no idea that the Fairhope Storybook Castles exist. Built using stone, multi-colored tiles, repurposed shingles, and everyday recycled objects, the home manifested from the creative imagination of Fairhope native, artist Craig Turner Sheldon.

Three different structures create the fairytale-like artistic gem: Sheldon, Mosher, and Boom castles. The stunning buildings were featured on HGTV’s Extreme Homes and Alabama Public Television. Folks can visit the residence to admire the exterior, but private tours are available by appointment, too. And to take it to another level, you can even spend the night at the Sheldon fairytale castle. This hidden gem is by far the strangest building you’ll find in Alabama.

2. Carved by Nature, Reinvented by Human

Rattlesnake Saloon in Tuscumbia is part building, part rock shelter, nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The off-the-beaten-path, open-air restaurant is unlike anything you’ve seen before. It’s by far the most unique restaurant in Alabama, and the serene waterfall only adds to the ambiance.

The dining area is set under a massive rock overhang, surrounded by man-made Western-themed elements. Guests can enjoy southern-style fare while admiring the effortless blend of natural beauty and man-made innovation. Filled with character and charm, after your visit, you’ll feel like you’ve discovered something truly unique. If you’re searching for weird architecture in Alabama, the Rattlesnake Saloon delivers. Best time to visit? Between March and October to avoid frosty conditions. You'll also want to visit the Frank Lloyd Wright Rosenbaum House, an architecturally unique gem in the nearby town of Florence.

3. A Whimsical "Mansion" With Haunting Vibes

Mystic Mansion is one of the most unconventional buildings on our list. In fact, it’s not a historic marvel built in the 19th century. Instead, the mansion is a haunted house attraction at the Park at OWA Roller Coaster in Foley. Inside, you’ll find an immersive dark ride taking visitors through 15 spooky scenes.

The building itself could be the centerpiece of a Gothic horror film. Resembling an ancient manor, the purple structure features corner towers, green crooked shutters, and a dark shingled roof. This may not be a real mansion, but its whimsical façade certainly makes it a one-of-a-kind building in Alabama. Of course, you’ll need to pay the amusement park entrance fee to see the mansion. With rollercoasters, a water park, and family-friendly rides, this could be a fun day trip in Alabama.

4. Henry Stuart House: Unusual and Sustainable

alt

Like the storybook castles mentioned above, the Henry Stuart House, known as Tolstoy Park, is another self-built marvel. After Henry Stuart, an English immigrant, was diagnosed with tuberculosis, he moved to Montrose just outside of Fairhope for warmer weather. In the 1920s, he built the 14-foot round hut-like structure using concrete blocks that he mixed and poured himself. Sure, this began as a minimalist home built by one man (known as the Hermit of Montrose) to live the remainder of his life, but today the unusual home is a historical landmark representing human ingenuity. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the hobbit-like hut is open for thousands of folks to see. While you’re here, carve out time to soak up the European-style vibes in Fairhope, Alabama.
