Delaware restaurants are some of my favorite places to write about, because I really, really love food. These 8 places stood out to me in my travels because they were all a little hard to find, but they all served some of the best food I've eaten in the First State. I also love writing about Delaware Hole in the Wall Restaurants (check out our Part 1 and Part 2). Have you been to any of these great places?
1. Boondocks, Smyrna
Boondock's is way out in the, you guessed it, boondocks outside of Smyrna. It's worth the trek, though, as they have all you can eat crab nights frequently, and their seafood is about as fresh as you can get anywhere in Delaware. Follow Rt 6. east from Smyrna and don't miss the left turn onto Lighthouse Road. You'll find them at 825 Lighthouse Rd, Smyrna, DE.
2. Surf Bagel, Lewes
Many transplanted New Yorkers or New Jersians have complained about not being able to find a great bagel in Delaware, and for the most part, their complaints are valid. However, Surf Bagel in Lewes is out to smash that stereotype, and their bagels (baked fresh every day!) are among the best in the state. Surf Bagels is across from the ACE Hardware on Route 1 in Lewes. Plug 17382 Coastal Hwy, Lewes, DE into your phone or GPS to find them.
3. Wilson's General Store
Wilson's has been making incredible sandwiches and other lunch foods since 1944, on the outskirts of Georgetown. Stop in to meet the friendly staff and grab a great meal. You can find them by driving around the airport and heading down Springfield road, at 24730 Springfield Rd Georgetown, DE.
4. Gus & Gus Place, Rehoboth Beach
If you didn't know this gem was on the Rehoboth Beach boardwalk, you could easily walk right past it! It blends in with the rest of the scene, but if you stop by, you'll quickly find out that it stands out among the rest. It's an old fashioned Hamburger / Soda Fountain deli, and everything you order there comes to you fresh and delicious. Gus & Gus has been a Rehoboth Beach legend for decades.Gus & Gus Place is just past Wilmington Ave on the boardwalk, at 15 South Boardwalk, Rehoboth Beach, DE.
5. USS Delaware Restaurant
Please note: USS Delaware Restaurant has permanently closed.
This unassuming little corner shop next to a collision repair garage on the outskirts of Milford doesn't look like much from the outside - and I was stunned when I walked in to see a classy restaurant serving up gourmet dishes, like the one pictured above. Who knew?! This is one of the newest restaurants in the area and you absolutely have to stop in to try it for yourself. Head out of town on 2nd Street, and once you hit the highway, you're there. 319 S Rehoboth Blvd, Milford, DE 19963
6. Fat Rick's, Wilmington (and everywhere else)
Fat Rick's serves some of the BEST barbeque in Delaware, for sure. They're hard to find, though, as they're mostly mobile. You're more likely to run into them at your favorite festival or block party, but once you've had their ribs, brisket, pulled pork or really, anything else they serve, you'll want to find their Wilmington restaurant, too. They're open for take out or eat in Tues-Friday 11am-2pm, so it's definitely a place you need to go during your lunch hour.Find them at 1413 Foulk Rd Wilmington, DE, or take a look at their Facebook to track the festivals and events they attend.
7. Bibi's Taqueria, Milford
Bibi's is one of the best taquerias in Delaware! It's located in a sort of strip mall next to Abbott's Grill in Milford, and walking past it was how I first discovered the place. Since then, I've returned time and time again when I'm craving authentic Mexican food. Mmm!Find Bibi's at
227 NE Front St, Milford, DE.
8. 1 in Town, New Castle
1 in Town could be named 1 in State, I think, as I have yet to discover another authentic African restaurant in Delaware. Their food is amazing and unlike anything you've ever had before, and once you've found it, you'll be sure to return! They're located on the side of the highway where Rt 13 and Rt 40 all merge and cross in New Castle. You can put 240 Dupont Pkwy # 300, New Castle, DE 19720 into your GPS to find the restaurant.
After looking up all of these great places, I'm tempted to create another Delaware Foodie Road Trip! Are there other hidden gems in Delaware that I should know about, next time I'm lost on some Delaware back road?
