If you pay any attention to Delaware news, you'll know the sad reason that everybody's been talking about the best sandwiches in Delaware. On Thursday, foodies across the region mourned the loss of Capriotti's founder Lois Margolet, the woman who brought us the most iconic sandwich in Delaware. In honor of Lois, one of the smartest businesswomen Delaware's ever seen, we wanted to take a look at the best sandwiches in Delaware.
1. Best Sandwich in Delaware - The Bobbie
The famous Bobbie is the sandwich that put Capriotti's on the map. It's made from pulled turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and a bit of mayo, and it was named in honor of Lois's Aunt Bobbie. It is, without question, the most iconic sandwich in Delaware, and thus it deserves our top honors.
2. Best Roast Pork Sandwich - Ioannoni's
I've always, always defended DiNic's in Philly as the best possible Roast Pork sandwich in the world - until someone brought me the Roast Pork Supremo from Ioannoni's. Mind. Blown. The pork is juicier, more flavorful, and the broccoli rabe and sharp provolone complete the picture perfectly.
3. Best Chicken Cutlet Sandwich - Ionannoni's
Ionnonis makes our list twice, because their Chicken Cutlet is not deep fried, it is grilled with olive oil and tastes like the most amazing thing you have ever eaten.
4. Best Artisan Sandwich - Purebread Deli
The Greyhound at Purebread is our pick for best artisan sandwich. It's piled high with prosciutto, fresh mozzarella and tomato, housemade basil pesto and roasted red peppers on tastty focaccia bread.
5. Best Wrap - Patty's Deli
You can now get the Pattys Favorite at her signature Georgetown location and the new shop in Lewes. I prefer it on a wrap, but of course, you can get it on a sub roll too. The sandwich itself is the perfect combination of fresh chicken, arugula, oven roasted tomatoes and fresh goat cheese.
6. Best Scrapple Sandwich - Wilson's General Store
7. Best Cheesesteak - Claymont Steak Shop
If you think it's hard to find a good cheesesteak outside of south Philly, you've got to try Claymont Steak Shop. They make the best cheesesteaks in Delaware, hands down, and their cheesesteaks rival the big Philadelphia legends.
8. Best BLT - Big Fish Grill
The only thing that can make a BLT better is to add fresh lobster, right? Big Fish Grill totally nails it, and completely deserves the honor of best BLT in Delaware.
9. Best Creative Burger - Restaurant 55
Okay, when you put together cheddar cheese, bacon, lettuce & tomato and serve it up on Fried Jalapeño Bacon MAC AND CHEESE BUNS, you're a shoo-in for most creative burger. This sandwich is cheesy, gooey heaven.
10. Best Breakfast Sandwich - NDB
The green awnings of Newark Deli & Bagels is a sight for hungover eyes every Sunday morning (and let's face it, probably Friday and Saturday mornings, too). Not only are they the savior of Univeristy of Delaware's students, but they also make the best breakfast sandwich in Delaware. Order a bacon egg & cheese on an everything bagel and rejoice! Call ahead if you can, but if you can't it still worth the wait.
11. Best Italian Sub - Casapulla
Casapulla serves up an italian sub that can easily claim to be the king of Italian Subs. You will not find any sandwich, except for the Bobbie, that is more beloved than a Casapulla Italian.
