10 Things Only Those From Delaware Know To Be True

Living in Delaware will teach you a few things that you may not expect! There are a lot of "state secrets" that people from Delaware keep to themselves, or learn as time goes on in the First State. You might not have realized how true some of these are until you stop to think about it for a second. Can you relate to any of the below?

1. The strangest things will make you late to work.

What is it with weird things spilling all over our highways? It was chickens a few weeks ago, pennies a few months ago, and who could possibly forget the millions of bees?!

2. Visting DuPont estates never gets old.

I don't care how many times you've visited, there's always a reason to go back - particularly to Winterthur, where I could wander for hours. The DuPont estates in Delaware have so much history and scenery, as well as buildings and houses to explore, and they never really become boring.

3. Nobody actually eats muskrat!

Everyone jokes about The Wagon Wheel and, well, Southern Grill does still serve it, but it's not nearly as common as people from Delaware claim it is.

4. The beaches are best in the off-season.

Whether you're enjoying local summer in September or a perfectly chilly day in February, the beaches are at their finest when the tourists go home.

5. Punkin Chunkin isn't what it used to be.

Remember when the point was for homemade pumpkin launchers to compete? Now, it's all hydraulics and corporate sponsored teams. It's certainly taken the magic out of the festival and turned it into an engineering contest. It's not necessarily a bad thing, just not really what Punkin Chunkin was meant to be.

6. Delaware blue crabs are as good as Maryland crabs.

They just suffer from a lack of marketing. There's really nothing better than sitting down at a crab shack in the First State and starting in on a dozen blue crabs... ask anyone from Delaware, and they'll confirm.

7. And our oysters are amazing, too.

There are so many amazing restaurants that feature oysters from Delaware, caught right from the bay itself. They're world famous for their taste and texture, and nobody makes them better than our home state.

8. Run far, far away during a race weekend.

Anyone who grew up around Dover just nodded to themselves. Yes, it's an exciting time for the state! The revenue that NASCAR brings to local businesses is much appreciated. But if you don't have to stick around, get away from the traffic and crowds for a few days.

9. And either camp out at Firefly, or leave the state.

This one is a dilemma for plenty of people from Delaware. On one hand, the chance to see huge, internationally touring acts is rare in slower lower. On the other hand, Firefly brings a lot of traffic and crowds to Dover - so make your decision and commit to it. Either camp and get the full experience, or head on out to anywhere else.

10. New Castle County might as well be its own state.

Seriously, can't Philly just annex Wilmington and we'll be done with it all?
