Want to curl up with a good book and a great meal? How about three books? Next time you’re traveling down I-84 through Union, you’ll want to stop by and try out this book lover’s dream come true.
We’re aware that these uncertain times are limiting many aspects of life. While we continue to feature destinations that make our state wonderful, please take proper precautions or add them to your bucket list to see at a later date. If you know of a local business that could use some extra support during these times, please nominate them here:
For decades, Traveler Food and Books has been serving up comfort food with a side of literature. Whether you're a serious book lover or enjoy an occasional browse through a bookstore, you will be fascinated by the large array of books, author photos, and scenery this restaurant has to offer.
It began in the 1980s when former restaurant owner, Marty Doyle, gave away books to customers as a way to give new homes to his old book collection. When Art and Karen Murdock bought the restaurant in 1993, they continued the tradition. Many of the current books are donated from local libraries and residents from around Connecticut and other New England states.
The theme of the restaurant continues on the menu. Sandwiches and Wraps have a clever literary theme that will keep you reading the menu for more than just choosing your next meal.
Although widely known for their books, let's not forget about the food. If you're looking for some warm-you-up comfort food, you will love the generous portions and delicious variety this roadside diner has to offer. Menu items range from tantalizing pastas and mouthwatering prime rib to pizzas, sandwiches, breakfast, and scrumptious desserts.
Even more comforting than the food are the prices. The daily specials are filling to your stomach without emptying your wallet. You'll definitely want to buy a few extra books with the money you saved.
While each meal comes with free books, if you want even more of a selection, you'll want to take a peek at the Cellar Bookstore. Take a few moments to browse the shelves and add to your personal book collection.
No matter what your taste, you'll find a book that will whet your literary appetite. Find everything ranging from mysteries, sci-fi, biographies, and cookbooks to classics and novellas. At $10 per bag sales, you'll have enough reading to get you through the winter.
Traveler's Food and Books offers a quiet New Year's celebration filled with good food and good books. What better way is there to bring in the New Year?
