It’s Worth Driving Across Connecticut To See This Stunning Waterfall For Yourself
We certainly have no shortage of natural wonders in Connecticut, and one of the most popular is our many mighty waterfalls, though we have some excellent man-made ones as well. From the thundering power of giants like Kent Falls to the tiniest trickles present in some of our hidden municipal parks, these special cascades are each lovely in their own way. One waterfall that's certainly well-named is the beautiful Great Falls in the town of Canaan. You'll find it in the (also aptly-named) Falls Village, a charming little village that holds about half of Canaan's population. Check out this spectacular waterfall in Falls Village, CT below!
Great Falls is one of the prettiest waterfalls in the Litchfield Hills. It's right along the Housatonic River, and at 50 feet high and 112 feet wide, it's pretty sizable.
This is the highest volume waterfall in Connecticut, but it's often used to generate hydro-electric power just upstream from the falls, so it does sometimes look less impressive than at peak flow times.
During the summertime, more of the water here tends to be used for power generation, so the falls are significantly less impressive when it's hot outside.
Visit just after the spring snow melt or heavy rains if you'd like to see this beauty at its most powerful.
The falls can be a little difficult to find, but there's a parking lot along Housatonic River Road.
This is such a beautiful spot that's perfect for a visit on a warm day!
