J.B. Weisenfels has lived in rural Arkansas for three decades. She is a writer, a mom, and a graduate student. She is also an avid collector of tacky fish whatnots, slightly chipped teapots, and other old things. In her spare time she enjoys driving to the nearest creek to sit a while. If you were to visit her, she'd try to feed you cornbread.
Unless we’re measuring something like forested acres or sheer, big-hearted hospitality, the truth is our home state is small. We’ve got way more trees than people, and that’s okay! Actually, here in the Natural State, we like to keep things small, cozy, and laidback. We’re all about slow, winding drives in the countryside and towns where you know everybody’s mama’s middle name—and we especially love small towns with unmistakably amazing small-town diners. From fried eggs to the best gravy, one little cafe has them all beat when it comes to small-town charm, big time flavor, and length of time serving their community. Let’s take a look at Skyline Cafe, shall we?
For today’s delicious adventure, we’ll be going to the small town of Mena. Population: 5,534. Charm: Immeasurable.
How long has the Skyline Café been in operation? Well, they’ve been around offering up delicious home cooking since 1922, a fact they’re right to be proud of.
Let’s start at the top of the menu, shall we? If you read a review of the Skyline Café, you’re going to read about the breakfast plates. And, listen, those reviewers are right to rave. Check out this decadent pair of plates:
There are plenty of incredibly comforting greasy spoon favorites on the lunch menu as well. Whether you're craving a steak with gravy or a big, juicy burger, Skyline Cafe's generous portions and fondness for serving up perfect comfort food classics make this little diner second to none among Arkansas eateries.
Again, we have to side with other reviewers on this: have you seen the breakfast at the Skyline Cafe? Doesn't it look like an entire plate of salty, warm heaven?
In fact, we challenge you to find a review of this diner that doesn't mention how great the breakfast dishes are. Y'all, that's because the breakfast dishes are GREAT.
One thing is for sure: you’ll leave feeling like you’ve joined a new family. That’s what good old Southern hospitality is all about, right? Treating strangers like honored guests? Nobody does that better than the Skyline Café.
The Skyline Cafe is open from 5:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. every day except for Wednesdays, when they are closed.
Tell us what you think: does Skyline Café really have the best breakfast in Arkansas? If you disagree, we’d love to hear about your favorite on our nomination page. If you’re into eating at the most historic diners in the Natural State, check out this article before you go.
