Once Abandoned And Left To Decay, The Professional Building In Arizona Has Been Restored To Its Former Glory
The Hilton Garden Inn Phoenix Downtown is a renovated historic building that retains its Art Deco charm and features a rooftop bar inspired by Alfred Hitchcock.
Most abandoned places in Arizona will never get a second chance, decaying in the elements until nature reclaims them completely. One building in downtown Phoenix, however, has a much brighter future. Built in 1932, The Professional Building sat vacant from the 1900s until the 2010s until it became the Hilton Garden Inn Phoenix Downtown. With its historic charm intact, the hotel is a shining example of how once-abandoned buildings can come back to life and add depth and character to their cities.
Constructed in 1932, the structure formerly known as The Professional Building is an Art Deco skyscraper in downtown Phoenix that towers at a staggering height of over 170 feet.
The architectural details are stunning. You don't see intricacies like this in modern-day construction - at least, not very often.
Functioning as an office building from the year it opened until the 1900s, The Professional Building hosted such notable tenants as the Maricopa County Medical Society and Valley Bank and Trust Company (later known as Valley National Bank of Arizona).
If the building looks familiar to you (and not because you've seen it in person), then you're likely a classic horror fan. It can be seen in the opening scene of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, as the camera pans across the Phoenix skyline.
After losing its last tenants in the 1990s (with the bigger-name clients, such as the Valley Bank, having already moved elsewhere), The Professional Building sat abandoned for over two decades.
Despite being listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993, the building's façade began to decay in the elements, and its days appeared numbered - until it was saved by Hilton in 2015.
Opened in May 2016, the Hilton Garden Inn Phoenix Downtown is a 170-room hotel that emphasizes modern luxury while still maintaining the building's historic charm.
The rooftop was also renovated into Floor 13 Rooftop Bar, which overlooks downtown Phoenix and offers craft cocktails inspired by - wait for it - Alfred Hitchcock and his iconic films.
