Hidden away in Anchorage is Double Shovel Cider Company (502 W 58th Ave., Unit C), the first mirco-cidery in the state of Alaska.
Their mission is to join the battle for the rejuvenation of American hard cider by hand-crafting superior cider for the superior person using ingredients emblematic of Alaska.
They create small batches of traditional style apple cider. Their cider is distributed all over the state and is available in bars and restaurants far and wide.
All the delicious varieties of cider are created on site. They use primarily Pacific Northwest apples, but flavor each cider differently by adding aromatic ingredients. Alaska local flavors include blueberry, raspberry and various wildflowers.
Many Anchorage residents have crab apple trees in their yards that produce small, tart apples not particularly good for eating. Double Shovel solves the apple problem by turning them into delicious ciders, cleaning up the city in the process.
The taproom is on the smaller side so it fills up quickly. Prepare to spend 1-2 hours relaxing and enjoying your cider and you won't feel anxious if the lines are long.
