Earn Unmatched Mountain Views On This Challenging Alaska Trail In The Chugach Range
The seasons are changing, and winter is setting in. If you want to keep enjoying outside and all the excitement the colder temperatures and weather can bring, try this challenging winter hike in Alaska. Located in Anchorage, Alaska, this is one gorgeous hike that’s worth the effort!
Unlike most of the lower 48, when the temperatures drop to below freezing, we Alaskans head into the mountains!
Between skiing, snowshoeing, and some of the best winter hiking, Alaska is a dream to be in the winter months. There’s one fantastic trail right outside of Anchorage in the Chugach State Park that you have to climb.
The O’Malley Peak Trail takes you up into the mountains, and offers 3,293 feet of elevation gain.
This is a steep, out and back trail. But the views all along the way are breathtaking.
You can start at a couple of different points, but the Glen Alps lot is a popular place to find parking.
The entire trail is around 7.7 miles, and it is difficult. This isn’t a trail to do solo, especially if you’re a beginner. The weather can change rapidly, and there is some scree to climb over at the top. But if if you make it, and it’s a clear day, expect to see an entire skyline of impressive mountain peaks in the distance. You may even get a good glimpse of Denali!

O’Malley Peak offers an incredible bird’s eye view into the Chugach Range that surrounds you. Make sure you take some photos to remember this awesome summit!
As with all winter hiking in Alaska, you need to come prepared.
The backcountry in our state is incredibly beautiful, but can be very dangerous. Bring ice grippers for your shoes, plenty of water and food, and equipment that will keep you nice and warm. With wind, below freezing temperatures, and possible snow, you’ll want to be prepared.
If you’re planning on getting out and hiking a lot this winter, consider some avalanche training.
