There are several towns located throughout Alabama that aren’t only charming, but are also filled with great history. Many of the towns are even home to a variety of hidden gems that are worthy of a visit. Listed below are seven Alabama towns that are filled with lots of history and some amazing hidden gems. Mooresville, which covers 64 acres and has fewer than 60 residents, is one of Alabama's most charming towns. It was established in 1818 and is also home to the state's oldest continuously operating post office (circa. 1840). This post office is one of the town's most popular hidden gems.
Tuscumbia, which was incorporated in 1820, is a small North Alabama town with fewer than 9,000 residents. Even though this charming town is small, it's filled with a variety of places you'll want to add to your itinerary, including Ivy Green: Birthplace of Helen Keller, Spring Park, Rattlesnake Saloon, etc. These are some of Tuscumbia's most amazing hidden gems.
3. Magnolia Springs
Magnolia Springs, which was established in 1891, is located along the banks of the Magnolia River in Alabama's Baldwin County. It's also the only town in the United States that offers a year-round postal mail delivery service via boat. Even though the entire town of Magnolia Springs is a hidden gem in and of itself, one of the town's best hidden gems is Jesse's Restaurant, which has welcomed guests from all over the world.
Lowndesboro was incorporated in 1962 and is one of the most well-preserved antebellum communities in the South. In fact, the town's St. Paul's Episcopal Church, which was built in 1857, is one of the nation's best preserved structures. Most everyone who visits Lowndesboro wants to see this historic church, which is considered a hidden gem.
Speaking of antebellum communities, Eufaula, which was incorporated in 1857, is filled with many antebellum homes. Its most recognized one is Shorter Mansion. This antebellum home was built in 1884 and is an incredible hidden gem. Another hidden gem that's located within this charming town is Lake Eufaula. Lake Eufaula covers approximately 45,000 acres and is nicknamed the "Bass Fishing Capital of the World."
Florence is a charming North Alabama town that was incorporated in 1826. Located along the banks of the Tennessee River, this historic town offers a variety of things to see and do. A few of its hidden gems include the Rosenbaum House, Trowbridge's, and the W.C. Handy Birthplace, Museum & Library. If you're ever in the Florence area, be sure to visit these three places. You won't be disappointed!
Childersburg is a historic Alabama city that was incorporated in 1889. However, because its history dates back further than 1540, it's believed that Childersburg is Alabama's oldest continually occupied city, and maybe even the oldest city in America. A couple attractions are located in this historic city that many people claim to be hidden gems, including the Kymulga Grist Mill & Covered Bridge and DeSoto Caverns.
