It’s no secret that Alabama is the perfect destination for a quick getaway, especially during the fall season. Listed below are seven mountain towns located throughout the Yellowhammer State that offer incredible outdoor attractions and colorful foliage this time of year. You’ll want to visit them all!


The charming town of Mentone is one of Alabama's top fall getaway destinations. Located atop Lookout Mountain, one of this town's most popular attractions in DeSoto Falls.


Birmingham, which is Alabama's largest city, is home to a variety of outdoor attractions. One in particular is Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve. Covering approximately 1,040 acres, this nature preserve offers the most stunning views of "The Magic City."


Huntsville is home to Monte Sano State Park, which is one of Alabama's most popular hiking spots. During the fall season, the views from Monte Sano Mountain are spectacular!


Just like Mentone, Fort Payne is also located atop Lookout Mountain. Little River Canyon National Preserve, which receives thousands of visitors each year, is this town's most popular outdoor attraction.


Oneonta is a lovely town that's located near three mountains in Blount County: Red Mountain, Sand Mountain, and Straight Mountain. Because of its historic covered bridges, this town is best known as Alabama's Covered Bridge Capital. Cheaha State Park is located in the tiny town of Delta. This beautiful state park, which happens to be Alabama's oldest continually operated state park, is located atop Cheaha Mountain (also Mount Cheaha) - Alabama's highest natural point. The views are incredible!


Pelham is home to Oak Mountain State Park. Covering nearly 10,000 acres, this is Alabama's largest state park. During the fall season, Pelham, which is located at the foothills of Oak Mountain, is covered in colorful foliage. Peavine Falls is one of Oak Mountain State Park's most popular features.
