The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel has made it possible to easily move people and goods across the U.S.-Canadian border for the past 85 years, and every year nearly 9 million vehicles pass through it. In fact, on this day in 1930, then President Herbert Hoover dedicated the completion of this momentous engineering feat. Two days later, the first vehicle, a Studebaker, passed through it. Getting to the point to actually envision just how such a tunnel would be constructed underneath the Detroit River, let alone get the backing for it, took political and economic will.

Here in this video produced by the very same engineering firm responsible for the tunnel’s construction, you see just how it was built. We have to say, it’s quite the modern-day achievement. Take a look for yourself.
