10 Reasons To Drop Everything And Move To This One Mississippi City

Madison, Mississippi, is ranked as the best place to live in the state due to its high median income, low crime rate, and excellent amenities.

Every Mississippi city has its advantages, but according to a recent study by the website Home Snacks, there’s one city that ranks above the rest. That city is Madison. In order to come to this conclusion, the website analyzed data, such as unemployment rates, median income, education, short commute times, and low crime, as it pertained to the state’s 70 most populated cities. After crunching the numbers, Madison landed the number one spot on the website’s "Best Places to Live in Mississippi" list. This ranking, paired with the fact that Madison’s population has increased by over 30% in the last five years, prompted us to take a closer look at the city. After doing so, we realized Madison is completely worthy of being named the number one city in the state; here’s ten reasons why.

1. Madison residents earn more per household than those of any other city in the state.

The median household income in Madison is $96,780. Click here for more details.

2. And when it comes to earning that money, the commute isn’t a problem.

The average commute time of Madison residents is about 22 minutes.

3. The city’s unemployment rate is lower than both the state and national rates.

As of February 2016, Madison’s unemployment rate was 4.3%, whereas Mississippi’s was 6.2% and the nation’s was 4.9%.

4. According to a study by the website Home Snacks, Madison has the second lowest crime rate in Mississippi.

In Madison, there are approximately 1,087 crimes committed for every 100,000 residents. The state’s rate is approximately 3,200.

5. Since Madison is located so close to Jackson, residents can enjoy a small town feel while taking advantage of all the amenities that a large metropolitan area has to offer.

And that small town feel doesn’t just happen. According to the city’s website, Madison is a "planned community giving priority to safety, comfort, and a small town atmosphere."

6. But, don’t think you have to leave Madison to find something to do.

The city is home to a number of wonderful attractions, including the Simmons Arboretum and the historic Chapel of the Cross Episcopal Church.

7. As far as food goes, Madison residents don’t have to travel far.

Both the city itself and the surrounding metropolitan area are filled with great eateries, such as Mama Hamil’s. The local favorite has earned numerous awards, including "Best Buffet" and "Best Soul Food."

8. Continuing education is a big deal in Madison, and the proof is in the numbers.

The percent of Madison residents with a Masters Degree is nearly twice as much as that of the nation – a trend that will most likely be continued since Madison is the site of one of Tulane University’s newest campuses as well as in close proximity to other institutions.

9. According to the Best Places website, “arts and culture” are listed among the pros of residing in Madison.

This is definitely due in part to the Madison Square Center for the Arts. The facility encourages residents to get in touch with their creative sides via an array of class offerings, lessons, a two week long summer arts camp, and other community events.

10. Although Madison has been named one of the "Top Ten Cities to Raise a Family" by Family Circle Magazine, the city is just as ideal for retirees.

Madison is not only a "Certified Retirement City" but has been nationally ranked as one of the best retirement locations in the entire nation.

Were you surprised that Madison was voted the "Best Place to Live In Mississippi?" What city would you name the best in the state?
