The 11 Types Of People You’ll Meet In Alaska – Which One Are You?

Describes various types of people you can encounter in Alaska, each with unique characteristics and lifestyles.

You will come across all sorts of people when you're in Alaska, from hippies and hardcore mountaineers to military guys and city slickers. Everyone has their own unique style and vibe, but they are all Alaskan at heart, which means they are kind, welcoming, hard working individuals that just want to enjoy life. So tell me, which type of Alaskan are you?

1. The Local

The locals are the people who have lived in Alaska forever but they aren't as much a sourdough or a recluse as they are a free spirit with unbridled love for the last frontier. You can spot them almost everywhere, they look comfy in the shoes they're in and will almost always have a smile on.

2. The Tourist

Not hard to spot tourists, especially in the summer. Their jaw is almost always slack from the astonishing size of everything in Alaska and it's pure beauty.

3. The Adventurer

The adventurer is gone every weekend kayaking, hiking, camping, climbing, you name it they are probably going to be doing it in the near future. These are the Alaskans you love making friends with because they are always off doing something cool!

10. The Alaskan

If you love Alaska and call it your home, then you're an Alaskan through and though, no matter how many years you've spent here. We are all happy people who are proud to call Alaska home.

4. The Hermit

You hear about the hermit more than you end up seeing them. These people enjoy having one or two degrees of separation and they plan on keeping it that way.

5. The Sourdough

The sourdough is an old-timer that's been around for some time and doesn't plan on leaving the state any time soon.

6. The Slope Workers

Many of the slope workers are gone for two weeks at a time or more so you may see them, but they are usually away a lot!

9. The Fisherman

They came to Alaska for one thing and one thing only. Those kings!

7. The Military Man

Or woman! There are tons of bases scattered across Alaska so seeing a member of the military is quite frequent.

8. The Snowbird

These are the folks who fly south for the winter.

11. The College Student

At UAA there is a rather low completion rate and that's because so many students from around the country will take a semester abroad to Alaska. They are here for to party and adventure making them pretty easy to spot. They are almost always wearing UAA gear and looking to have a good time.

Which type are you? Is there another type I missed?
