Some places are not given the credit they deserve, even if they truly are hidden gems. This is one such place.

Spruce Knob Lake in Randolph County certainly isn't unknown, but it is not easy to find, either. Many people aren't necessarily aware that there's also a trail that leads hikers around the perimeter of the lake - and it's actually the best part of the location.

Most of the year the water is blue and clear, but in the summertime, you will notice the lake changes to a brownish color due to plankton blooms and the presence of other organic matter.
The trail begins as a boardwalk that passes into thick woods with small clearings. Along the route are many examples of foliage unique to that particular region of Monongahela National Forest. This includes both plants and flowers.

The "grasses" are actually not really grasses at all, at least not the kind you would expect to find in a typical field. Along certain parts of the trail you will come across portion of the woods that allow easy access to the banks of the lake, in which the ground becomes soft and spongy because it is comprised of thick moss.

Past the open field and the natural alcoves adjacent to the bank, you will come across an unusual Red Spruce forest comprised of nearly bald trees that only bloom on one side. The bare sides are due in large part to strong westerly winds.

The lake, which is the highest in the state, allows both fishing and boating, but no swimming. There is also a campground nearby (less than a mile) that provides a place to stay while enjoying other attractions, such as the nearby Spruce Knob Summit, the highest part of West Virginia.
