Adventure is no stranger to Portlanders. Why sit around on a weekend afternoon when you could be shredding on a mountain, windsurfing in the Gorge, or biking the equivalent of a really long commute? If the adventure bug has you, get your gear and head out to one of these adventurous locales to stretch your legs and make the most of your day.
1. City Biking
Grab your bike and explore the city's miles and miles of bike trails. Hop on the Springwater Corridor or Marine Drive path, explore the Waterfront Loop or head to Sauvie Island and ride the day away to get a good look at the city from a different perspective.
2. Forest Park
If you want to stay close to home, Forest Park is the place for adventure. Trek a section of the epic 30-mile Wildwood Trail or go at your own pace on any of the park's 80 miles of trails.
3. Columbia Gorge
To get your feet wet in windsurfing, paddle boarding or kiteboarding, head to the Columbia Gorge, where you can rent some gear and be on the river in no time.
4. Willamette River
If you want to paddle, consider a trip to the Willamette for a great view of the city while enjoying your adventure. Head to the Portland Kayak Company to get situated with the gear you need and head out onto the river.
5. Dog Mountain
Located in the Columbia Gorge, the hike up Dog Mountain is half the battle. At the top you are rewarded with epic views and a sense of accomplishment. The entire trail is 6.9 miles and climbs 2800 feet, requiring a moderate level of fitness.
6. Government Camp
If the sense of adventure hits during the winter, Mt Hood's Government Camp is a great place to head. Stop into Mt. Hood Adventure, the official visitor's center for Clackamas County and a one-stop shop for rentals, tours, and lodging.
7. Mt Bachelor
During winter, Mt Bachelor is a great alternative to Mt Hood for adventure seekers. With 10 ski lifts, the mountain ranks as one of the largest ski resorts in Oregon.
8. Silver Falls State Park
Enjoy a wonderful 7-mile loop that will take you past 10 waterfalls at this picturesque park.
