Hike Rugged Trails And Explore An Old Fire Tower At Wyoming’s Black Mountain Lookout Trail
Hike the Black Mountain Lookout Trail in Bighorn National Forest for breathtaking views and historic sights.
If you're on the hunt for a beautiful and rugged trail that showcases remarkable views, make the drive up to Bighorn National Forest near Sheridan and climb to the top of the Black Mountain Lookout Tower. From way up here, you can see for miles!
One of the most rugged and scenic trails in Bighorn National Forest is the 3.5 mile Black Mountain Lookout Trail.
You'll climb high into the hills with over 1,000 feet of elevation gain, so be prepared to work for this one!
This steep trail isn't for the faint of heart, but it's well worth the effort for the breathtaking views.
At the top of this out-and-back trail, you'll find the historic Black Mountain Fire Lookout Tower!
The tower was built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and it offers 360-degree views of the canyons and valley below.
Most hikers take about an hour to reach the peak, and they're rewarded with an incredible one-of-a-kind view from this historic tower.
Don't be discouraged by the elevation gain to get to the top of the Black Mountain Lookout. Take your time and enjoy the sights along the way, and you'll be there before you know it!
On a clear day, you can see for miles and miles! No wonder this peak was chosen as a fire spotting site.
Though this trail is fairly heavily trafficked in the summer months, be sure to hike in a group and carry bear spray.
You can find more information about the Black Mountain Lookout Tower and Trail on the Forest Service website. There's a trail map on Alltrails, here, that shows just where to go for the trek to the top. There's limited parking at the trailhead, so carpool if you're arriving with friends, and try to get there early enough to snag a spot.
