We here in the great state of Wisconsin don’t mind a little trip out into the country. We love heading up to the Northwoods or venturing outside the city limits to find some hidden gems. These 11 restaurants are in some spots that are a bit more out of the way. While some are in slightly larger towns, none are bigger than about 7,500 people and most are in far smaller places than that.
In no particular order, here are some spots in areas a bit more removed that have food, service and atmosphere that makes them so worth the trip:
1. Fitz's on the Lake - Lodi
Lodi sits on Lake Wisconsin a bit north of Madison. Fitz's has an incredible outdoor space, live music and a wonderful menu. It's a perfect spot that's close to home but feels a lot more removed from city life then you'd imagine. Located at W11602 Co Rd V, Lodi, WI 53555.
2. Clearwater Harbor - Waupaca
Located on the Chain O' Lakes southwest of Stevens Point, Clearwater is a stunning spot to dine outdoors. Open seasonally from May Through September, it's a beautiful spot for a meal. Located at N2757 County Hwy QQ, Waupaca, WI 54981.
3. Maiden Lake Supper Club - Mountain
Way up in the Cathedral Pines State Natural Area, this restaurant tucked into protected land offers all the great things you love about a supper club plus a peaceful, remote location. It's one of the very best. Located at 15649 Maiden Lake Rd, Mountain, WI 54149
4. The Trout House at Rushing Waters - Palmyra
Head about 45 miles southwest of Milwaukee, between Lake Geneva and Watertown, and you'll find Rushing Waters trout farm. It's a stunning drive through part of the Kettle Moraine State Forest and you'll arrive at this somewhat remote little surprise. Plan ahead and you can catch your meal before having it prepared for you. The Trout House is a stunning building with tons of windows and the seafood is divine. Located at N301 Co Rd H, Palmyra, WI 53156.
5. Al Corso - Collins
This stunning restaurant sits on the edge of Collins Marsh, midway between Manitowoc and Lake Winnebago. This restaurant is far fancier than you thought you'd find in the Wisconsin countryside, but it's still reasonable while being absolutely delicious. Located at 20931 Main St, Collins, WI 54207.
6. Garden of Eatin' - Galesville
Northwest of LaCrosse and Trempeauleau, this small town is full of charm and that extends to the service at Garden of Eatin'. Don't let the name fool you; there are plenty of things carnivores love here, too. It's one of the friendliest, coziest, most delicious spots the state has to offer. Located at 19847 E Gale Ave, Galesville, WI 54630.
7. Z's Fork Horners - Gleason
Midway between Wausau and Rhinelander, this little spot is one of the only options in town, but that doesn't mean they skimp on taste or service. Even if it were crowded among tons of options, folks would still be choosing to go here for a stellar fish fry, friendly staff and awesome burgers. Located at N4291 Co Rd X, Gleason, WI 54435.
8. Hometown Grill - Shiocton
This small spot 40 miles west of Green Bay is as welcoming as it gets. You really feel like you've been invited into Grandma's kitchen for the types of meals that will make you nostalgic. Located at W7711 WI-54 Trunk, Shiocton, WI 54170.
9. The Wheelhouse - King
A little further down the Chain O' Lakes you'll find The Wheelhouse. Sure, the burgers are enough to keep you coming back, but it's the giant pig roasts and grilled chicken that will have you making specific plans just to visit. Located at E1209 County Rd Q, King, WI 54981.
10. Moonridge Brew Pub - Cornell
Northeast of Eau Claire near Brunet Island State Park, this little brew pub is the perfect place to carb-load after a long day outdoors. Stellar pizza and lots of beers to choose from make this a place worth traveling for. Located at 501 Bridge St, Cornell, WI 54732.
11. White Stag Inn - Rhinelander
The biggest town on our list, Rhinelander is sort of a gateway to the Northwoods, offering all the things you need to stock up on before going even more country. Maybe it's not country to some of you, but it made the list because White Stag Inn is good enough for us to possibly bend the rules a bit. It's a simple menu that's been perfected over the years and you'll be planning to run your errands to coincide with a chance to dine here. Located at 7141 State Highway 17 N; Rhinelander, Wisconsin 54501.
