A winter wonderland awaits, at a magical trail in Madison. The University of Wisconsin Arboretum is filled with a network of trails that are awesome for snowshoeing. As the snow blankets the landscape, the Arboretum invites visitors to explore its trail system. Discover quiet footpaths, boardwalks, and fire lanes on a Wisconsin winter adventure you won’t forget.
You’ll find “the Arb” in the heart of Madison – it’s close to places like the State Capitol and State Street, but it feels a world away. The wild parkland borders Lake Wingra, and it includes miles of trails, many of which are open for snowshoeing.
The Arb is an expansive natural sanctuary that spans over 1,200 acres, showcasing a diverse collection of native plant species and ecosystems. Established in the 1930s, it's a living example of the University of Wisconsin's commitment to conservation, education, and research. It becons explorers and nature lovers, alike.
The Arb is gorgeous in any season. Blossoms lure lilac lovers in the Sping; shade trees help hikers beat the summer heat and fall colors put on a dazzling show. The winter can be especially spectacular when the trees are frosed in white.
You can discover the magic of winter at the arboretum as you traverse its scenic trails, and trek into the tranquility and beauty of the snowy landscape.
There are over 10 miles of designated ski and snowshoe trails that wind through this picturesque landscape. While these trails aren't groomed, they offer a wild yet accessible experience for skiers, snowshoers, and hikers.
The official ski and snowshoe trail map is conveniently posted at trailheads and outside the Visitor Center. For safety and to preserve the Arboretum's natural beauty, stick to the marked and designated trails.
I’ve spent a lot of time in the Arb and love this place. Even if you don’t have snowshoes, it’s a great place for a winter hike. Learn more about the UW Arboretum on the UW Madison website. Get your snowshoes at REI so you can enjoy even more Wisconsin winter adventures.
