The Niagara Escarpment is one of North America’s most impressive geologic gems – and it just so happens to run right through Wisconsin. There are a few places in the state that offer close-up views of the natural wonder, but the best way to view it is the Eagle Trail. No easy feat, the trail contains lots of stairs and some rough terrain. However, it also contains incredibly scenic surroundings that are sure to amaze. Take a look:
Make your next outdoor adventure one to remember by taking on Eagle Trail, one of Peninsula State Park’s most difficult (and most rewarding!) trails.
An understandably popular trek, the 2-mile loop trail features the bluffs of the Niagara Escarpment, caves, forested terraces, and waterfront vistas.
It’s also steeped in history, which you can learn about via signage that lines the trail.
With a 200-foot descent, several sets of stairs, loose rocks, and exposed roots, it’s far from an easy trek.
However, the effort required is more than a fair trade for the immense beauty you’ll experience along the trail.
And you don’t have to wait long to experience that beauty since Eagle Terrace, an overlook that provides panoramic views of Eagle Harbor, sits at the beginning of the trail.
As the trail descends, you’ll be led through cedar forests. And when in season, colorful wildflowers are a common sight.
There are lots of wonderful waterfront views, too.
Eventually, you’ll make your way to the trail’s best feature of all - the outcroppings of the escarpment.
Nowhere else in the state offers views of the Niagara Escarpment like those found along Eagle Trail, making for an adventure like no other.
The towering formation is truly a sight to behold!
You’ll definitely want to spend some time exploring it and the several caves carved into it.
Because of the trail’s rocky, uneven, and steep terrain, proper footwear is a must and flip-flops are a major no-no. Also, walking sticks are highly recommended.
