When French Missionaries saw the huge bluish hills rising above the surrounding Wisconsin landscape, they named the area Blue Mounds. Little did they know, there was a secret lurking under these majestic hills. Blue Mounds is located about 25 minutes west of Madison. You’ll find Cave of the Mounds in the southern slope of the east mound.
A crack in the surface rock allowed rain to wash in, which created a process that resulted in huge underground cavities.
For a long time, no one had any idea the cave existed. There was a farm right over the cave, and in the 1930s, a limestone quarry.
Blasting at the quarry blew the cave open and it was revealed to the world. People flocked to the site to the site to see what was under Blue Mounds, and an attraction was born.
Today you can see all the wonders of the cave on a walking tour, including impressive stalagmites that reach up from the ground and massive stalactites that hang from the cave’s ceiling.
