Craving a getaway? Why not take a staycation at one of West Virginia’s beaches? Sure, we’re landlocked, and the closest ocean vacations are in Virginia and North Carolina, but West Virginia’s lakes and rivers offer some great beaches, too. Grab your sunscreen and pack your towels, because these pretty West Virginia beaches are calling your name.

The Battle Run area of Summersville Lake is home to a gorgeous beach. Summersville Lake is a dreamy retreat complete with scenery including a lighthouse and cabins. You can visit Summersville Lake Retreat at GPS coordinates N 38.19950, W -80.8660.
If you're visiting this lake in Braxton and Webster counties, check out Bee Run Beach. Bee Run Recreation Area is complete with a marina and a playground. It's the perfect place to picnic! Visit it off of Bee Run Rd., Sutton, WV 26601.
Jennings Randolph Lake is located in Mineral County, West Virginia and Garrett County, Maryland. If you visit, check out Shaw Beach. This area is meticulously maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Visit this spot at Jennings Randolph Lake, Elk Garden, WV 26717.
The beach area at Tygart Lake State Park had been closed for several years, but it reopened to the public in 2014. It has a renovated bathhouse and picnic area, gift shop and horseshoe and bocce ball courts. There are also kayaks for rent! Visit this park at 1240 Paul E Malone Rd, Grafton, WV 26354.
There's a nice beach at Shavers Fork in the Stuart Recreation Area of the Monongahela National Forest. This area is also incredible for fishing and camping! Visit this spot in Elkins, WV 26241.

State parks are some of the most magnificent areas to explore. Not only do they preserve massive sections of untamed local wilderness, but they often boast longer trails than local parks. At lesser-known state parks in West Virginia, you’ll find all sorts of beauty. Just take a look at Pinnacle Rock State Park and Droop Mountain Battlefield, both of which have unusual landscapes and all sorts of stories to tell.
