One Of The Oldest Hotels In West Virginia Is Also One Of The Most Haunted Places You’ll Ever Sleep

How do you feel about spending the night in a hotel on the National Register of Historic Places? Wells Inn, located in Sistersville and one of West Virginia's oldest still-operating inns, can provide you that experience for the bare-bones rate of just $55 per night (rates subject to change, of course). During the years when oil was making fortunes, the West Virginia town of Sistersville along the Ohio River in Tyler County boomed.

Grand brick buildings lined her streets, including Wells Inn, built in 1894 to house a range of interesting occupants, from wealthy oil tycoons to popular entertainers come to perform at the nearby opera house.

But in addition to its historic value as one of West Virginia's oldest inns, Wells Inn boasts another claim to fame. Staff and guests alike report experiencing paranormal activity while staying here, including watching doors open and close themselves, hearing the sounds of a pen scratching against paper, furniture being dragged into place, and footsteps, and feeling a sudden chill.

There's also an elevator that heads up to the third floor for no apparent reason and a door (to Room 324) that mysteriously sticks shut, like someone is holding it closed from the inside.

The prime suspect is the ghost of founder Ephraim Wells. Can all these things be explained away? Probably, but where's the fun in that?
