By now, you may have grown weary of expressions like "Shop local" or "Support small businesses." But our local retailers and restaurants are what gives our state character and they deserve our support now more than ever. Besides, they usually come with a pretty great backstory, like the always charming Shipwreck Cafe in Olympia. When you support this place (by ordering the most delicious breakfast of your life), you're keeping this local institution alive.
It all started in the mid-90s when Kim and Sherri Mcquilkin were working at The Rib Eye (which closed many years ago.)
The couple had about 20 years of restaurant experience and they decided it was time to open their own restaurant. They bought The Shipwreck Cafe in 1995 and got to work making it the fantastic space it is today.
In the restaurant's early years, Kim and Sherri had no working capital.
Some small local businesses did extend them credit because of their great reputations but for the first few years, they'd take the money they made that day and go buy food for the next day.
Fortunately, thanks to their stellar reputations and delicious food, The Shipwreck Cafe did turn a profit.
After 24 years, the couple sold the cafe to its current owners, Aaron and Roni Sue Phyllis.
This restaurant may be under new ownership, but most of the menu remains the same.
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day at this cafe - and it's fantastic.
If you're too late for breakfast, treat yourself to some hearty garlic fries or garlic tots.
They're every bit as tasty as they look.
The cuisine can best be described as old-fashioned American diner food, and it's downright addictive.
Whether you're tasting the famous biscuits and gravy, savoring a scramble, or chasing a burger with an old-fashioned shake, one thing is certain: you'll leave the table full.
The team at The Shipwreck Cafe are doing their best to keep everyone safe and healthy during these unique times.
They opened a drive-thru window where customers can pick up online orders or treat themselves to something tasty.
The Shipwreck Cafe is currently open daily from 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Stop by the next time you're in Olympia and see what you've been missing.
Supporting local businesses can be as simple as ordering biscuits and gravy. Have you been to this charming cafe lately?
