Washington Has A Park Dedicated To Sculptures That Will Bring Out Your Inner Artist
There are approximately 10 million reasons to love Washington’s San Juan Islands… and we’re about to give you one more of them. Located in Roche Harbor, the San Juan Islands Sculpture Park is a hidden gem you won’t want to miss. As you stroll the grounds, you just might be inspired to create something yourself.
The San Juan Islands Sculpture Park is located on Roche Harbor Road, where it has been since 1998.
It was originally called the Westcott Bay Institute for Art & Nature.
The park, which has really evolved over the years, is funded entirely by donations.
It's a true labor of love.
It's very likely that no two visits to the park will be the same, as the sculptures are rotated regularly.
Many of them are for sale, so they'll depart when they have a buyer. But each piece of art has a two year limit here to make room for new additions.
Both well-known artists and unknown creators are welcome to contribute to the park.
Here, it's truly all about the art.
There are over 150 sculptures in the park at any given time, and they come from all over the country.
And since they're chosen by a blind selection juried process, everyone has a fair shot.
If you have little ones, they'll love the Starfish Project, an original interactive feature created for kids.
Little artists can create their own sculptures or designs out of found objects like shells, driftwood, and other beach materials.
Most of the park's 40,000 annual visitors just take a quick walk through the grounds... but you're more than welcome to bring lunch and utilize the big tent with tables and chairs.
You can even rent the park for a private party, although no weddings are allowed here.
The San Juan Islands Sculpture Park is open daily from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. all year long.
Work a visit into your next San Juan Islands vacation.
