There’s A Catholic Monastery On An Island In Washington And You’ll Want To Visit

Our Lady of the Rock on Shaw Island is a serene monastery where visitors can experience a peaceful retreat and participate in farm work.

Have you ever wanted to visit a monastery? Most of them welcome visitors as long as they're respectful, and they're typically peaceful, scenic places. And many Washingtonians don't know this, but there's a ladies' monastery on Shaw Island, and it's absolutely beautiful.

Shaw Island is the smallest of the four San Juan Islands, spanning just 7.7 square miles.

It's the perfect place for a monastery.

Our Lady of the Rock is a serene and picturesque monastery on the island, home to a small group of devout nuns.

The women who call Our Lady of the Rock home spend their days working and praying here.

Farm work is essential here, as the ladies grow and raise their own food.

If you visit for more than a day, you'll be encouraged to help.

The motto of the Order of Saint Benedict, Ora et Labora, is the animating spirit by which the nuns live.

They begin every day with prayer, and prayer is an essential part of their lives. They welcome guests of all faiths to pray with them.

The monastery is surrounded by 300 acres of forest and farmland, where the nuns and the animals live in peace.

They raise Cotswold Sheep, Highland Cattle, llamas and alpacas, pigs and poultry, and Jersey cows for milking. And they sell the flowers, veggies, and herbs grown on the property.

Our Lady of the Rock is small, so while guests are welcome, they can only accommodate a few at a time.

There's a small retreat house for those who wish to stay overnight, but people are always welcome to visit for a day. There is no charge to stay, but a nightly donation is highly encouraged. Call the monastery at

360-468-2321 for more details.

Our Lady of the Rock is a relaxing retreat for those seeking to learn more about the lifestyle and get in touch with their spirituality.

The fact that it's on a gorgeous little island doesn't hurt.

If you're ever on Shaw Island, make sure to visit the nuns at Our Lady of the Rock. And while you're at it, add a trip to this unique chapel to your Washington bucket list.
